Pregnant Widow of NHL Star Shares Heartfelt Eulogy After His Tragic Passing

During a heartfelt memorial service on Monday, Meredith Gaudreau, the widow of Columbus Blue Jackets player Johnny Gaudreau, revealed she is expecting their third child. Meredith shared the news while honoring Johnny and his brother Matthew, both tragically lost in a biking accident.

“John and I enjoyed the best six months as a family of four,” Meredith expressed, reminiscing about their time together. “Now, we’re a family of five — I’m nine weeks pregnant with our third baby.” She described this pregnancy as a “total surprise.”

The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Noa Harper Gaudreau, on September 30, 2022, and their son, Johnny Edward Gaudreau, on February 22. Meredith highlighted how quickly their family has grown in just three years of marriage. “It’s a blessing to be the mother of John’s three children, especially during these challenging times,” she said.

Sadly, Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were killed by a suspected drunk driver on August 29 while biking in Salem County, N.J. The driver, 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins, faces charges including DUI and two counts of death by auto.

This tragedy unfolded on the eve of their sister Kate’s wedding, amplifying the heartbreak within the family. Both brothers were remembered fondly at the service held at St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Media, Penn. They were laid to rest side by side, a testament to their close bond.

“John took care of Matt, and Matt took care of John,” said Madeline Gaudreau, Matthew’s widow. “It comforts me to know they are together forever.” Meredith added, “I find solace knowing that they can continue their conversations in Heaven.”

Jonny’s pallbearers included NHL players like Kevin Hayes and Sean Monahan, while Matthew was honored by family members, including his future brother-in-law, Devinn Joyce. The funeral followed a private viewing the day before.
