Caitlin Clark, the rookie sensation of the Indiana Fever, has been making waves in the WNBA after a stellar NCAA career, setting numerous records along the way.
However, not everyone is showering her with praise. WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes has faced some backlash for her recent comments regarding Clark.
During a guest appearance on “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” fellow WNBA great Nancy Lieberman shared that a conversation with Swoopes about Clark may have ended their friendship.
At the time, Clark had just shattered the NCAA Division I scoring record, racking up 3,951 points. Swoopes mistakenly claimed that Clark had an additional year of eligibility due to COVID, prompting Lieberman to step in and clarify the situation.
Lieberman recalled, “Swoopes got upset with me. I told her I was just sharing the truth.” Their friendship appears to have cooled since that chat, with Lieberman mentioning an attempt to speak at the Final Four that didn’t go well.
Despite the fallout, Lieberman emphasized, “My life is good, with or without Sheryl Swoopes.” However, she expressed a desire for reconciliation.
Swoopes didn’t remain silent, responding on Twitter. She said, “I get what you’re trying to do with Stephen A. Smith, but it’s not working. My life is good without you too.”
In the midst of the drama, Swoopes did take a moment to reach out to Clark, admitting her earlier error regarding eligibility in a text message. She expressed respect for Clark’s talent and accomplishments.
Clark graciously responded, showing no hard feelings, and complimented Swoopes for her contributions to women’s basketball.
