The United States stood out as the leading country during the initial day of competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics, clinching a total of five medals – one gold, two silver, and two bronze.
Among these, three medals were earned in swimming events, one in cycling, and another in diving.
The opening act saw Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon claim a silver medal in the women’s three-meter synchronized diving springboard final. Their impeccable performance secured America’s first medal of the Games, with a score of 70.20 points from their forward 2.5 somersaults and 1 twist dive.
Following a thrilling morning at the pool, Chloe Dygert added the second medal of the day to the U.S. tally, clinching the bronze in the women’s individual time trial of cycling after an early crash. This marked a significant achievement for Dygert in the realm of road cycling.
With the remaining three medals all coming from the pool, swimming sensation Katie Ledecky captured a bronze in the 400-meter freestyle as she inches towards becoming the most decorated female swimmer in Olympic history, needing just one more medal to equal the current record.
The team relay events also brought glory to the American squad, with the 4×100 free relay teams securing medals. Chris Guiliano, Jack Alexy, Hunter Armstrong, and Caeleb Dressel clinched the first gold for Team USA in a thrilling finish. Meanwhile, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske, and Simone Manuel put up an impressive performance, claiming silver and setting a new American record in the women’s 4×100 free relay.
