WWE boasts an array of championships across its various brands, from world titles to mid-card and tag team belts. However, both fans and wrestlers are eager for some fresh additions to the title scene. For instance, Karrion Kross has expressed interest in the establishment of a WWE Extreme Championship. Additionally, several superstars are advocating for a mid-card women’s championship similar to the WWE Intercontinental and United States Championships.
It seems WWE management is taking note of these demands… sort of.
At the recent Bad Blood 2024 event, WWE’s Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque made a significant announcement by unveiling a new championship that will be contested annually at Crown Jewel Premium Live Events (PLE).
During these events, the reigning WWE Champion will go head-to-head with the World Champion, for both men and women. While the titles won’t be on the line, competitors will vie for the newly introduced Crown Jewel Championship.
In this exciting matchup, if all goes as planned, Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will take on World Heavyweight Champion Gunther, assuming he successfully defends his title against Sami Zayn on Monday Night Raw. Meanwhile, WWE Women’s Champion Nia Jax will face Women’s World Champion Liv Morgan, following a disqualification scenario involving Roxanne Perez and Rhea Ripley.
Champion vs. Champion matches have been significant in wrestling history, especially dating back to the inception of WWE’s brand split. The latest such bout took place at King & Queen of the Ring, where the then-WWE United States Champion Logan Paul challenged Cody Rhodes.
The last clash of titleholders from Raw and SmackDown was at WrestleMania 38 Night 2, with Roman Reigns overcoming Brock Lesnar.
While this new championship doesn’t directly create opportunities for other roster wrestlers, it certainly promises thrilling matchups that fans rarely get to witness throughout the year.
The last championship introduction before this was the World Heavyweight Championship on April 24, 2023, followed by the WWE Women’s Speed Championship, although the latter is only defended on X.
Mark your calendars, WWE Crown Jewel 2024 is set to stream on Peacock in the US and WWE Network internationally on November 2, 2024.
