Camper Amazed by Kangaroos ‘Surfing’ at Australian Beach

A delightful video of kangaroos “floating” on the water at an Australian beachfront campsite has taken TikTok by storm. Posted by @sazzletoc on September 25, the clip has received over 749,000 views.

The scene unfolds at the Habitat Noosa campsite, showcasing a line of kangaroos hopping gracefully across the water along a sandy shoreline beneath a vibrant blue sky. The caption accompanying the post adds a nostalgic touch: “Winter camping flashback. The best morning wake-up.”

Situated on the edge of Lake Cootharaba, Habitat Noosa boasts over 500 meters of beachfront, making it just a 25-minute drive from Noosa in Queensland, Australia.

Noosa, part of the Sunshine Coast’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a treasure trove of biodiversity, hosting over 3,000 wildlife species. This includes more than 700 native species such as kangaroos, glossy black cockatoos, possums, and flying foxes, as noted by Visit Noosa, the region’s tourism authority.

With around 1.65 million tourists visiting the reserve each year, many engage in environmentally-friendly activities like birdwatching and nature hikes, according to UNESCO.

A November 2021 study published in Ecological Management & Restoration highlights that while kangaroos are iconic to Australia, they are seen as both an asset and a pest, with populations fluctuating significantly since European settlement. In commercial harvest areas, the kangaroo population was estimated at over 20 million in 2011, but drought affected numbers drastically, with declines of about 9 million in Queensland from 2013 to 2018 and 7 million in New South Wales from 2014 to 2019.

‘Priceless’

TikTok users couldn’t help but be charmed by the kangaroo footage. User @kylablender exclaimed, “This is incredible!” while Gap 360 commented, “Such an experience.” Others, like Tom, found the sight breathtaking, calling it “one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.” User marci also chimed in, stating, “I love when kangaroos walk on water,” and @serenamos humorously noted, “For a second, I thought they were floating.”

Comments like “Wow, that is priceless” from Tracey and “What a sight” from androidoverload reflect the awe inspired by the video, while Andingroo joked, “Ya don’t see that every day.” Mem closed with, “I have never witnessed such behavior.”
