While hiking in the Israeli desert, a family made an unexpected discovery—a secluded green pool. Despite its dubious hue, they boldly decided to take a swim.
Simcha Sher, originally from Upstate New York but now residing in Israel, shared their adventure on Instagram. The now-viral video, which has racked up 8.5 million views since its July 21 posting, features her husband and their three-year-old son enjoying the unexpected oasis in the desolate landscape.

In the video’s caption, Simcha reflected on the moment, stating: “When you’re in the middle of the Judean desert and you find a pool??? I was a little grossed out, but it was surreal to find this pool amid miles of nothing!”
The family lives just outside Jerusalem and had set out to locate this rumored pool. Simcha described the scene: “It felt like an ancient cistern. Just imagine nothing for miles around except this little pool—a striking contrast against the desert’s wild, empty beauty.”
According to Pool Research, green water typically signifies the presence of algae, which thrives in nutrient-rich conditions. However, the CDC warns that exposure to algae can lead to various health issues, ranging from mild stomach pains to more serious conditions.
