This Monday is Columbus Day, a holiday commemorating Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas back in 1492. Although the day is historically significant, it also generates discussions around the consequences of colonialism, leading some to observe it as Indigenous Peoples’ Day to honor Native American history and culture.
As a federal holiday, Columbus Day affects postal services, meaning many mail carriers will adjust their schedules. So, be prepared for possible delays in mail delivery, and check in on local businesses, as some stores and restaurants might be closed.
Post Office
All U.S. post offices will be closed on Monday, stopping regular mail and package deliveries. However, you can still use some online postal services like purchasing stamps, boxes, and supplies, or scheduling package pickups for after the holiday.
FedEx
In contrast, FedEx will remain open on Columbus Day. While FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will have modified services, most of their delivery operations will continue as usual.
UPS
UPS, like FedEx, will operate on the holiday. However, services such as UPS SurePost and Mail Innovations may experience a one-day delay, while all UPS store locations will be open.
Other Businesses
Expect many banks, including major names like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank, to be closed. While digital banking and ATMs will still be operational, it’s good to double-check store hours if you plan to visit retailers or grocery shops, as many will remain open.
A report from the Pew Research Center highlights that 21 states and Washington, D.C. provide paid holiday time for Columbus Day. Federal employees typically have the day off too. Although Indigenous Peoples’ Day isn’t an official federal holiday, President Joe Biden has acknowledged it through proclamations over the past few years.
In his statement, Biden emphasized the importance of honoring Indigenous peoples, stating, “On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor Indigenous peoples’ strength, courage, and resilience,” while emphasizing commitments to respecting Tribal sovereignty.
