The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has labeled several recalled animal feed products as high-risk for beef and dairy cattle, lambs, and deer.
On August 7, Wisconsin’s Vita Plus Corporation recalled 15 products after discovering possible excess mineral content.
Just like humans, animals require minerals for various bodily functions, from building bones to facilitating metabolism. However, too much of a good thing can be detrimental; excessive minerals can be just as harmful, or more so, than insufficient amounts.
For instance, sulfur-based minerals are essential for cattle, supporting the necessary bacteria in their rumen. Yet, an overabundance can hinder the absorption of other important minerals, potentially leading to “polioencephalomalacia.” This disorder softens the brain’s gray matter, resulting in symptoms like loss of appetite, staggering, and unusual behaviors. In severe cases, it could lead to blindness, seizures, or coma.

The affected animal feed products reached consumers in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, carrying brands like “Cattle’s Choice,” “TNI Beef Cow Mineral,” and “Litchfield Beef Cow Mineral,” among others.
This recall involves more than 800 bags of feed.

The FDA issued a “Class I” risk classification for these products, indicating that use could result in serious health issues or even death for the animals affected.
Another product, “TNI Beef Cow Mineral-RUM/DBZ Medicated For Mature Reproducing Cows,” received a “Class II” risk classification, suggesting it could lead to temporary health issues, but serious risks are minimal.
The FDA emphasizes the importance of a safe animal food supply to ensure the health of both animals and humans. Its Center for Veterinary Medicine plays a critical role in ensuring animal welfare, reviewing ingredient safety, approving food additives, and managing oversight through comprehensive inspections and enforcement programs to handle complaints, emergencies, and recalls related to animal food.
