A bipartisan group of lawmakers is committed to certifying the 2024 election results and attending the inauguration of the winner, as outlined in a recent letter.
New Jersey Democratic Representative Josh Gottheimer and Nebraska Republican Representative Don Bacon initiated this effort to showcase leadership during this crucial election period and promote a message of calm.
Bacon emphasized the importance of respecting election outcomes once legal challenges are resolved, stating, “We work hard during the campaigns, but we must also respect the results. The citizens are sovereign.” Their movement is called the “Unity Commitment.”
The legislators pledged to promote peace and reconciliation, condemning violence that jeopardizes people or public spaces.
Election integrity remains a significant issue for many Republicans, especially after former President Donald Trump claimed his 2020 defeat was due to a “rigged” election.
Following months of Trump’s unfounded theft claims and the January 6, 2021, Capitol unrest, 147 congressional members, including 139 House Republicans and eight Senate Republicans, resisted acknowledging Biden’s victory. This opposition was spearheaded by Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, along with Congressman Mo Brooks, as reported by Reuters.
A study of 64 failed lawsuits after the election concluded that Trump and his supporters could not provide solid evidence for their claims.
Here’s a list of Republicans committed to certifying the 2024 election:
Don Bacon, Nebraska
Brian Fitzpatrick, Pennsylvania
Anthony D’Esposito, New York
Mike Lawler, New York
Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Oregon
Nick LaLota, New York
During a CNN interview, Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma discussed the acceptance of the 2024 election results. He remarked that both parties might voice concerns, regardless of who wins, indicating a cautious approach to the situation.
