Recent polling data suggests that Donald Trump‘s lead over Joe Biden in Ohio during the 2020 Election cycle has dwindled to its lowest point.
A survey by Marist of 1,137 registered voters showed Trump maintaining an edge in Ohio, winning by 48 to 41 percent, which is a drop from his 8-point lead in both 2016 and 2020.
Although Trump is still projected to win Ohio in November, his lead of seven points over Biden is the slimmest margin seen in any Ohio poll since November 2023.
This particular poll is the first one conducted in Ohio since Trump, the former U.S. President, was convicted of multiple charges in late May, related to falsifying business documents in a hush-money trial.
Previous polls in Ohio had shown Trump with an eight-point lead over Biden, as per National Public Affairs and Data for Progress surveys conducted in November.
Ohio, historically known as a bellwether state, has often aligned with the winner of the presidential elections and mirrored national results. However, the 2020 election saw Trump winning Ohio while Biden claimed victory nationally, breaking this trend.
Trump’s lead in Ohio, while significant, poses a tight race against Biden with only five months left until the election.
In terms of demographics, Trump is favored amongst independents and younger voters, while Biden has made gains with white voters and diminished support among Black voters.
When it comes to the economy, an essential election topic, Trump holds the advantage with voters in Ohio believing they were better off under his presidency compared to Biden’s administration.
The Marist survey, conducted from June 3-6 on 1,137 registered Ohio voters, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6%.
An email was sent to Trump’s office for comment but received no response at the time of reporting.
