The inability of several social media users to follow Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign account on X, previously known as Twitter, led to speculations aimed at the platform’s owner, Elon Musk.
In a statement shared on social media on Sunday, President Joe Biden announced his decision not to run for reelection in the 2024 presidential race, citing pressure from within his party and Democratic donors concerned about his age and mental sharpness.
In a subsequent post, Biden endorsed Vice President Harris as his successor, stating: “My first choice as the party nominee in 2020 was selecting Kamala Harris as my Vice President, and it proved to be the right choice. Now, I fully support and endorse Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Let’s come together as Democrats and defeat Trump.”
Responding to the endorsement, Harris expressed her gratitude, saying: “I am honored to have the President’s backing. I aim to earn and secure this nomination by continuing to engage with the American people and championing our cause in this critical election period.”
Asserting her commitment, Harris stated, “I will work tirelessly to unify the Democratic Party and our nation to defeat Donald Trump and his divisive Project 2025 agenda. With 107 days until Election Day, we must stand together and prevail.”
However, complaints emerged on X from users unable to follow the @KamalaHQ account, known as the official rapid response page for Vice President Harris’ presidential campaign.
Alyssa Farah Griffin, former Trump aide and current The View co-host, shared her experience of being blocked from following the account and voiced her concerns about the issue.
Several users encountered similar obstacles to following @KamalaHQ and questioned whether this was a deliberate act by Elon Musk or Twitter’s incompetence.
Journalist David Leavitt highlighted the issue, suggesting possible election interference by Musk through preventing users from following the Kamala Harris account.
Further comments on the matter underscored the frustration faced by users trying to engage with @KamalaHQ.
Grok, a product of Musk’s company xAI, detailed the challenges users experienced in following Vice President Harris’ official campaign account, prompting speculation over Musk’s involvement in the restrictions.
While Musk did not directly address these concerns, he did share the removal of @BidenHQ X account following President Biden’s decision to withdraw from reelection. Musk also acknowledged and resolved other issues on the platform.
