FDA Raises Concern Level: Important Update on Bread Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall of certain bread pastries from earlier this year as a Class II risk. This classification indicates that consuming the affected products may cause temporary or medically reversible health issues.

A total of 16 bags produced by La Superior Bakery in Columbia, Tennessee, and distributed in Alabama are involved in this recall. The products were found to have undeclared sesame seeds, which pose a risk for individuals with sesame allergies.

Among the recalled items, 11 bags contain pan de rancho—a traditional Mexican bread—while five bags are filled with pan Guatemalteco, a sweet treat. Each batch consists of five pieces of the respective bakery product.

The voluntary recall began on July 29, with the formal risk classification issued on August 23.

According to the FDA, a Class II recall appears in cases where exposure to a non-compliant product could lead to temporary health effects, but the likelihood of severe consequences is low. This is distinct from Class I recalls, which indicate a significant risk of serious health problems or death, and Class III recalls, where exposure is unlikely to result in negative health effects.

If you have the 11 bags of pan de rancho, they are marked with recall number F-1747-2024, while the pan Guatemalteco is identified by F-1748-2024.

Additionally, this week, the FDA designated another recall for “L&B Beautiful Morning Glory Muffins” as Class II after metal fragments were discovered in the muffins, produced by Lunds Mitchell in Minnesota. The FDA cautioned that such foreign objects could cause serious injuries.

The FDA also issued a recall notice for Bliss Tree Butter Snacks, which were sold nationwide, as they may contain undeclared milk and sesame. These snacks were imported by Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar Overseas LLC and sold in retail and online stores like Amazon.

Lastly, nearly 140,000 popsicles from Unilever have been recalled due to undeclared milk, which can also trigger allergic reactions in some consumers.
