With Hurricane Milton on the horizon, FEMA’s head, Administrator Deanne Criswell, is actively dispelling myths regarding the agency’s response to Hurricane Helene. During a news conference in North Carolina, she emphasized the agency’s extensive efforts in assisting those affected.
“We have thousands of people on the ground,” Criswell noted, addressing both federal workers and volunteers. “It’s disheartening to hear misinformation that undermines our staff who have come here to help.” She reassured that they would remain in the area as long as needed.
In the aftermath of Helene, misinformation has been prevalent, including claims that federal aid is being withheld from certain regions based on political affiliation. This narrative has been fueled by comments from political figures like former President Donald Trump, who falsely suggested that funds are being redirected away from disaster relief.
To combat rumors, FEMA has taken steps to clarify its funding processes. Recently, Criswell addressed speculation that individuals affected by disaster would only receive $750 in aid. She revealed that this amount is intended for immediate necessities and that more funds are accessible for home repairs and other costs—provided individuals apply for assistance.
“If people don’t apply, they won’t get help,” she explained. “Fear shouldn’t stop them from seeking aid.” Criswell also firmly refuted claims that the agency would seize properties from those who need aid.
Meanwhile, recovery efforts are underway as Hurricane Milton rapidly escalates to a Category 5 storm, aiming toward a region still reeling from Helene, which resulted in over 230 fatalities. More than 100,000 residents in North Carolina are still without power, as extensive search-and-rescue operations continue with local and national resources mobilized.
The Pentagon has deployed an additional 500 active-duty troops to aid with recovery, increasing the total to around 1,500 personnel equipped with advanced technology to assess damage and conditions. Military aircraft are conducting extensive missions to provide medical assistance and facilitate evacuations, emphasizing their commitment to aiding citizens during this critical time.
