Boar’s Head Provisions Co. has significantly expanded its meat recall to include an additional 7 million pounds of products, as reported by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS).
The recall follows the detection of listeria in a liverwurst sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health. Boar’s Head issued a public apology, stating, “We deeply regret that our liverwurst products were found to be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes,” expressing condolences to affected families.
This expanded recall includes meat products distributed across the U.S. between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024, under both Boar’s Head and Old Country labels, with “sell by” dates ranging from July 29, 2024, through October 17, 2024.
The recall encompasses 71 newly identified items, including sliced meats and packaged poultry, which were also exported to the Cayman Islands, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. A comprehensive list of recalled products and labels can be accessed on the USDA FSIS website.
As of now, the CDC, in collaboration with the USDA FSIS, has identified 34 individuals sickened across 13 states, leading to 33 hospitalizations and 2 fatalities.
Being infected with Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis, which may cause symptoms like headaches, stiff neck, fever, and muscle aches.
If you have purchased any recalled products, Boar’s Head urges you to visit their recall hotline at (888) 266-7913 or customer service at 1-800-352-6277. They recommend returning or discarding these items for a full refund.
Deli retailers are also advised to dispose of any open cheeses or meats and sanitize all surfaces to prevent potential listeria contamination.
