The judge presiding over Donald Trump’s election fraud case has dismissed his attempts to keep evidence sealed. Judge Tanya Chutkan plans to release the evidence appendix this Friday, despite Trump’s concerns about its potential political impact, particularly regarding the Kamala Harris presidential campaign.
The former president faces several serious charges, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S., obstructing an official proceeding, and reducing the rights of individuals, all linked to alleged pressure exerted on state officials to overturn the 2020 election results.
Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance commented that Chutkan’s ruling effectively debunked Trump’s arguments, including the suggestion that public disclosure could harm his political standing. In a blog post, Vance highlighted that the judge took a firm stance against the notion that releasing evidence equates to election interference.
Judge Chutkan’s rationale emphasizes the importance of transparency in criminal proceedings, noting that withholding information based solely on political outcomes could appear to be election interference. She made it clear that political factors would not influence her decisions.
Vance remarked that Chutkan’s efficiency and straightforward approach were evident in this ruling.
Trump’s legal team had previously warned that disclosing new evidence might jeopardize potential witnesses, especially given the extensive media attention leading up to the presidential election in less than three weeks. They also alleged that Harris is using released evidence in her campaign ads.
On October 2, Chutkan had already unsealed a 165-page evidence brief, revealing explosive details about Trump’s conduct during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots, including his alleged disregard for then-Vice President Mike Pence. The brief even mentioned an unsuccessful attempt to back a disputed report on voter-machine fraud in Michigan.
Friday’s release will include a significant appendix to that brief, presenting additional accusations against Trump that the public has not yet seen.
