New York Attorney General Letitia James recently expressed that she, along with other Democratic attorneys general, stands ready to challenge the proposals of Project 2025 should Donald Trump secure a second term in November.
Project 2025, initiated by the conservative Heritage Foundation, serves as a guideline filled with ideas for the next Republican president. Its plans include a significant boost in presidential authority and the replacement of numerous federal employees with those loyal to the GOP.
Additionally, it outlines extensive reforms for the federal government, including suggestions to dismantle the Department of Education and the Department of Homeland Security.
Vice President Kamala Harris and her supporters have frequently referenced Project 2025 to highlight the potential risks of another Trump presidency.
Trump has attempted to distance himself from the project, asserting ignorance about its origins. On his Truth Social platform, he stated, “I know nothing about Project 2025. I have no idea who is behind it,” while criticizing some of its proposals as “absolutely ridiculous.”
Despite his claims, the comprehensive 900-page handbook was drafted by several long-time allies and former officials from his administration.
During an MSNBC interview, James noted that some of Project 2025’s ideas were previously suggested during Trump’s first term. She emphasized the Democratic attorneys general’s commitment to defend democracy, stating, “We successfully contested 80 percent of their proposals back in 2016.”
James described Project 2025 as a written manifesto, asserting their readiness to protect democracy and freedoms. She urged citizens to vote for liberty and a government that honors the rights of all individuals, promoting unity over division.
Both James’ office and Trump’s campaign have been approached for added commentary.
Project 2025 maintains that it does not represent any specific candidate or campaign.
