Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney recently labeled Texas Senator Ted Cruz as “dangerous” due to his alignment with former President Donald Trump following the 2020 election.
Cheney has been vocal about her criticisms of Cruz, especially with Democratic Congressman Colin Allred challenging him in the upcoming November election. Notably, she, alongside her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has also shown support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race against Trump.
In an interview with ABC affiliate WFAA, Cheney explained her endorsement of Allred, asserting that a fundamental conservative value is loyalty to the Constitution. She stated, “When I watched the things Ted Cruz did after the 2020 election… that’s just, it’s just dangerous,” referring to his backing of Trump’s unfounded claims of a stolen election.
Cheney expressed her commitment to assisting Allred in his campaign, emphasizing the importance of the role Cruz holds. Cruz, a significant figure in the Republican Senate, had previously announced his intention to contest the certification of electors amid allegations of voter fraud. He stood by his actions during the January 6 events when a mob attempted to disrupt the electoral vote certification.
As a member of the House committee investigating the January 6 attack, Cheney advocated for a Department of Justice inquiry into Trump’s involvement. In a May interview with CNN, Cruz faced questions about whether he would accept the outcome of the 2024 election, which he dismissed as a “ridiculous question,” insisting that challenges and potential fraud are part of the electoral process.
Polling indicates that while Cruz maintains a lead over Allred, the race may be tightening. A recent Texas Public Opinion Research survey shows Allred trailing Cruz by only 4 points, with a margin of error that suggests a near tie. RealClearPolitics reports an average lead of 6 points for Cruz as of early September.
