Microsoft Outage Impacts U.S.-Mexico Border App

A global Microsoft outage is affecting various sectors including banks, airlines, and now, the app utilized by migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The CBP One app, crucial for individuals crossing the border, is currently experiencing technical glitches. Issues include the unavailability of waiting times on the app and encountering errors when trying to check. The CBP desktop website is also facing technical problems as a result of the Microsoft outage.

This app is essential for asylum seekers and migrants who need to schedule appointments with border officials. Those aiming to enter the U.S. legally must use the CBP One app to request appointments at landports for entry into the country. This is the primary method, apart from certain exceptions, to seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Microsoft reports a global inability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services during this outage. The exact cause, nature, and magnitude of the outage are still unclear.

Initially suggesting improvement, Microsoft later faced widespread outages affecting airlines globally, leading to the grounding of Delta, United, and American Airlines flights in the U.S.

The outage is also impacting industries such as banks, retailers, self-checkout, and digital payment services, as well as essential services like doctors, emergency services, and broadcasters. The extent of the impact on CBP services and the restoration timeline for the app’s functionality remain uncertain.

“Amnesty International views the mandatory use of the CBP One application as a concerning aspect of the U.S. government’s migration and asylum policies at the U.S.-Mexico border, limiting asylum access against human rights and refugee laws.”

“While acknowledging the potential benefits of technological innovations like electronic entry management for safe passage and orderly border access, exclusivity of programs like CBP One for seeking international protection at the U.S. border should be reconsidered to prevent obstacles,” the organization stressed.
