The second night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago is set to feature iconic R&B artist Patti LaBelle and Chicago native rapper Common among its performers.
Originally expected to perform on the first night, James Taylor was pulled from the lineup due to scheduling conflicts, as President Joe Biden addressed the audience during the East Coast’s 11 p.m. hour. It’s still uncertain whether he will return to the DNC schedule in the following days.
Patti LaBelle, celebrated for her hits like “New Attitude” and “Lady Marmalade,” is not just a music legend; she’s also a dedicated supporter of Democratic initiatives. Marking her 65th anniversary in the music industry, LaBelle recently performed at the White House’s Juneteenth concert in 2023, showcasing her strong ties to the party.
LaBelle has a historic connection to the DNC, having performed “A Change is Gonna Come” at the 2004 convention in Boston, where then-Senator Barack Obama gave a speech that catapulted him into the national spotlight.
Likewise, Common, born Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr., shares a close bond with the Obamas, thanks to their Chicago roots and mutual dedication to social justice. Michelle Obama invited him to a White House poetry event in 2011, underscoring his role in both music and activism. Common has since become a staple at Democratic events.
Among the speakers scheduled for this Tuesday’s event, themed “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” are both Barack and Michelle Obama.
The program begins at 6:30 p.m. ET, starting a half-hour earlier than the opening night.
