Lauren Boebert, a Republican Representative, is pushing to examine Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle’s phone in the aftermath of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
During a hearing on Monday, Cheatle testified before the House Oversight Committee about various aspects related to the assassination attempt incident.
At one point during the hearing, Boebert questioned Cheatle about her communications, asking if she had used encrypted messaging apps like Signal to contact anyone at the White House.
Cheatle replied that she had not engaged in such communication.
Boebert then inquired if Cheatle would be willing to submit her personal phone for analysis, to which Cheatle responded that she would do so if necessary. Boebert expressed her intention to pursue obtaining Cheatle’s personal phone.
The individual responsible for the attack on Trump, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was named on July 13. The incident occurred during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, resulting in injuries to Trump, the death of one attendee, and critical conditions for two others. The Secret Service intervened by fatally shooting the suspect on-site.
During the hearing, Cheatle faced intense questioning and calls for her resignation. Democratic Representative Ro Khanna of California joined the chorus calling for Cheatle’s resignation, emphasizing that such incidents warrant stepping down from one’s position.
