House Republicans have been busy lately, putting forward various bills to honor former President Donald Trump.
The most recent bill, brought by Rep. Greg Steube of Florida, suggests renaming the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to “Donald John Trump Exclusive Economic Zone of the United States.” This bill, introduced on Trump’s 78th birthday, aims to have all official references to these waters include the former president’s name.
This move shows the enduring support Trump holds within the GOP, with other initiatives including renaming airports or featuring Trump’s portrait on new bills.
Although these bills are symbolic gestures, as they are likely to be rejected by the Democrat-controlled Senate even if they pass the House, they highlight the ongoing influence of Trump in Republican circles.
Explaining his proposal to rename the EEZ, Rep. Steube mentioned Trump’s positive actions for the oceans during his presidency, highlighting the bill as a tribute to Trump’s contributions to the nation.
Not all Republicans are on board, as former GOP congressman Adam Kinzinger criticized the efforts as excessive. Anyone can view his comments on X, previously Twitter.
Another initiative came from Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona, suggesting reintroducing the $500 bill with Trump’s image to boost the economy and provide Americans with more financial options.
In a separate move, Rep. Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania introduced a bill in April to rename Washington Dulles International Airport to Donald J. Trump International Airport, emphasizing it as a symbol of freedom and strength.
Other lawmakers responded by proposing renaming the Miami Federal Correctional Institution to the “Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution” as Trump faced legal challenges.
Not stopping there, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida led a group of House Republicans in suggesting awarding Trump the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of his achievements, citing his tenure without starting any wars among other reasons.
Despite the plausible rejection of these bills, the efforts to honor Trump reflect the ongoing admiration and support he retains within certain political circles.
