There’s been quite the stir around Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, and a petition calling for his impeachment is making waves.
The petition, spearheaded by the Free and Fair Democracy PAC, has hit its mark, rallying supporters to write to their congressional reps to urge for Alito’s removal from the highest court. The campaign cites several alleged ethics violations by Alito, including receiving undeclared gifts and trips from conservative figure Paul Singer.
As of June 12, over 47,200 letters had been sent as part of the petition, with the goal set at 51,200.
The petition contends that Alito’s presence is a “mockery” to the Supreme Court and the nation, advocating for his impeachment and ousting from office.
Supreme Court Justices serve for life, except in cases of death, resignation, retirement, or removal. Alito, appointed by George W. Bush, has faced scrutiny over statements suggesting a return to “godliness” and his alignment with conservative causes.
Alito’s comments on bringing the U.S. back to Christian values have drawn criticism, with Senator Elizabeth Warren expressing concerns over his impartiality and the impact on the Court’s credibility.
