Shooting Incident on I-75 in Kentucky Leaves Multiple Victims

Authorities in Kentucky are currently dealing with an active shooter situation along Interstate 75 in Laurel County, located just south of Lexington. The sheriff’s office has provided updates as the situation develops.

The incident started Saturday evening, with multiple reports of gunfire directed at vehicles on I-75 around 6 p.m., near London, Kentucky. Eyewitnesses indicated that shots originated from a wooded area close to the highway.

Joseph A. Couch, a 32-year-old man, has been named a “Person of Interest.” He’s described as 5’10” and about 154 pounds. Authorities are urging anyone with information about Couch’s location to call 911.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Scottie Pennington took to Facebook to inform the public that the suspect is still at large and stressed the importance of staying indoors. More updates will follow as the situation unfolds.

According to Mayor Randall Weddle, seven individuals were reported injured, though not all injuries were a direct result of gunfire—some stemmed from a vehicle accident that occurred during the chaos. “Fortunately, no one has lost their life, which is a relief,” Weddle stated while asking for continued prayers from the community.

In a post on X, Governor Andy Beshear confirmed the shooting, advising that both sides of the interstate have been closed at exit 49 and asking the public to steer clear of the area.

Beshear also mentioned receiving initial updates from state police and the Office of Homeland Security, stating that he is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating support. “Please keep everyone involved in your thoughts,” he added.

A significant police presence is in the area, with a perimeter set up to contain the situation. I-75 remains closed in both directions at exit 49, and locals are advised to seek alternative routes.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Louisville has also dispatched officers to assist local and state authorities in managing this critical incident.
