Arizona’s Attorney General Kris Mayes is set to reveal major news next week regarding the state’s fake elector scandal. In a recent chat with KPNX during their Sunday Square Off show, Mayes hinted that one of the defendants in the case is likely to become a cooperating witness.
“We’re making progress and feel good about the case,” Mayes commented, though she kept details about the announcement under wraps. Previously, in April, she charged 18 individuals connected to the fake electors incident, accusing them of attempting to overturn Arizona’s 2020 election results. The charges range from fraud to forgery and conspiracy, all serious felonies.
Among the defendants are several prominent figures associated with Donald Trump, including Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows, who also face similar charges in Georgia. Notably, Jenna Ellis has already pleaded guilty and agreed to assist prosecutors, along with Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, who have turned on Trump in the Georgia case.
The Arizona Republican Party has criticized Mayes’ investigation, labeling it an “abuse of legal authority” and alleging interference in the upcoming 2024 elections. They argue that the actions taken only serve to undermine the state’s legal credibility.
Mayes has firmly stated that the defendants attempted to “undermine the will of Arizona’s voters,” emphasizing that President Biden won the state by just over 10,000 votes in 2020. “Arizona’s election was free and fair. Whatever their motivations, those who plotted against our laws must be held accountable,” she asserted.
