The commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Al Lipphardt, has expressed strong disapproval of recent comments made by Donald Trump regarding military awards. Speaking at a campaign event in New Jersey, Trump claimed that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is a “better” award than the Medal of Honor, which is the highest military honor in the U.S.
The Medal of Honor is awarded to service members who have demonstrated “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.” Conversely, the Presidential Medal of Freedom honors civilians for their exceptional contributions to the nation.
During his remarks, Trump stated, “It’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor… but the civilian version, it’s actually much better.” He named Miriam Adelson, a Republican donor who received the Presidential Medal in 2018, as an example, saying, “She’s a healthy, beautiful woman.” This sparked significant backlash.
Lipphardt criticized Trump’s comments as “asinine,” arguing that they undermine the significance of the Medal of Honor and disrespect the sacrifices made by its recipients. He emphasized that the Medal of Honor represents the bravery of service members who often face life-threatening situations.
The statement highlighted that comments from someone who has previously held the position of commander-in-chief should reflect a deeper understanding of the responsibilities related to military service. Notable Medal of Honor recipients, such as Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe and Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Petry, exemplify the valor recognized by this prestigious award.
Lipphardt stressed that while the Presidential Medal of Freedom is significant, it cannot be compared to the Medal of Honor, which represents the gravitas of military service. He reminded Trump that he awarded the Medal of Honor on behalf of Congress, reaffirming its importance and the reverence owed to those who receive it.
Criticism of Trump’s remarks extended beyond Lipphardt. Sarafina Chitika, spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, remarked that Trump lacks understanding of true service. Alexander Vindman, a former National Security Council member, asserted that Trump’s comments dishonor Medal of Honor recipients.
Capture recipient and retired Army Capt. Florent Groberg acknowledged the value of the Medal of Freedom, but clarified that it’s not directly comparable to the Medal of Honor due to their differing significance. Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Ramos echoed this sentiment, stressing the dangers faced by those who earn the Medal of Honor.
In response to the criticism, Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, defended him, saying, “This is a guy who loves our veterans.” However, Trump’s controversial comments are reminiscent of past instances, such as his remarks about John McCain’s war hero status.
