Hey there, curry fans! Walmart has issued a health alert warning about a Chinese food product sold throughout their stores. This product may contain allergens that can be dangerous for some people.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has raised concerns about Wow Bao’s Thai curry chicken bao potentially containing soy and sesame, even though these allergens are not listed in the ingredients. Bao buns can come with various fillings, and Wow Bao offers options like kung Pao chicken, teriyaki, and Mongolian spicy beef.
Allergy experts state that soy and sesame are among the top allergens in the U.S. that can cause severe reactions like tongue swelling, hives, and vomiting. In extreme cases, these reactions can escalate to a life-threatening condition known as anaphylaxis.
The issue came to light when a customer received the wrong product in their box labeled as curry bao chicken. Further investigation showed that some teriyaki bao products, containing sesame and soy, were mistakenly packaged as curry bao chicken.
The affected product is the 10-oz. package containing four pieces of “BAO Thai-Style CURRY Chicken” with the “best before” date and “P-40001” stamp inside the USDA seal. These frozen items were distributed to Walmart stores nationwide after packaging on March 20, 2024.
Fortunately, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions linked to this issue. Anyone worried about their health after consuming these products should seek medical advice, as recommended by the FSIS.
The FSIS advises consumers to return or dispose of any remaining products that might still be in freezers due to the mislabeling issue. For further inquiries about this health alert, you can reach out to Brandon Tammaro, the VP Strategic Growth of Wow Bao, at [email protected] or 888-496-926.
Remember, a public health alert is different from a product recall, where items are withdrawn from shelves and customers are asked to return them. In this case, a recall has not been necessary as the affected product is no longer available for purchase.
Recalls are typically initiated when product safety is in question, like in situations where contamination or undeclared allergens pose serious risks. Stay informed about food alerts to ensure your well-being!
