Guacamole and salsa sold at Kroger Stores have been recalled due to listeria concerns, as announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday. Supreme Service Solutions is assisting in the recall of various products sold at Kroger Stores in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio. The affected items were distributed by Weirs Farm Inc. of Willard, Ohio.
The recalled products include:
- Pico/Guac Combo – UPC 850054894434
- Butternut Squash Cubes – UPC 850053685552 – 12 oz bag
- Chopped Cilantro – UPC 850053685552 – 2 oz bag
- Chopped Cilantro with White Onions – UPC 850053685422 – 5 oz bag
- … and several others
The FDA stated that these products, packaged in clear-plastic grab-n-go containers, were recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a severe infection mainly affecting older adults, individuals with compromised immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Symptoms range from high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infections can be life-threatening in young children and can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.
No illnesses related to these products have been reported so far. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development discovered the contamination through routine sampling.
Consumers who have bought these affected products are urged not to consume them. Weirs Farm previously expanded a recall of some bagged vegetable products sold at various stores, including Walmart, Aldi, and Kroger, across 13 states as a precaution against possible bacterial contamination.
