Chappell Roan, the rising star of the pop world, was recently invited to a White House event celebrating Pride Month but later decided to decline the invitation due to political reasons.
Roan, a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, made the announcement at her Governors Ball Music Festival performance on June 9th, where she dedicated a song to the White House.
She shared with her fans that although the White House had requested her presence to perform in Washington, D.C. for Pride, they failed to meet the terms outlined by her team for her attendance.
Last year, during Pride Month, there was an increase in anti-LGBTQ incidents reported by LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations, such as GLAAD and the Anti-Defamation League.
Reasons Behind Chappell-Roan’s Rejection of White House Pride Invite
Roan sent a strong message during her Governors Ball appearance, dressed as the Statue of Liberty, symbolizing justice and freedom. She responded to the White House invite by saying, “I will come when you do this.”
At another point in her performance, Roan quoted the Statue of Liberty, emphasizing the need for freedom for all marginalized groups, including transgender individuals and women.
In an interview with Variety last year, Roan expressed her joy at being part of the queer community and the vibrant energy it brings.
