The U.S. Pacific Fleet is ramping up its presence in the Middle East with the deployment of a second aircraft carrier, following orders from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. This move has created a notable “carrier gap” in the Western Pacific.
Recently, one of China’s aircraft carriers conducted drills near Taiwan, while Italy’s carrier strike group made its way to Guam. Aircraft carriers play a vital role in demonstrating naval power and supporting national interests worldwide, with the U.S. leading the pack with 11 operational carriers, six of which are stationed in the Pacific. China follows with the second-largest fleet.
