The sexual assault trial against French actor Gérard Depardieu has been delayed this week due to health issues.
On Monday, a Paris criminal court announced that it will push back the trial to March of next year, prioritizing the actor’s health.
The Allegations
Depardieu, who maintains his innocence, faces accusations of sexual assault from two women. Prosecutors allege that the incidents took place on the set of the film Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters), where he is claimed to have used “violence, coercion, surprise, or threat.” The 75-year-old actor allegedly pinned the women down and groped them over their clothing.
In the wake of the #MeToo movement, France is grappling with sexual violence issues, especially within the film industry. On the day of the hearing, around 100 demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse in support of sexual assault victims, with some activists even managing to enter the courtroom.
Depardieu Health Concerns
The court has ordered a medical assessment of Depardieu’s health. His lawyer, Jérémie Assous, requested the postponement, citing Depardieu’s heart problems and diabetes-related complications. Assous stated that while doctors advised against attendance, the actor was eager to present his side in court.
Assous mentioned to The Associated Press, “He is anxious to defend himself, because for over three years, a huge number of inaccuracies, false information, and lies have been systematically disseminated.” He emphasized that this trial will finally allow the defense to speak.
Support for Depardieu
A year ago, numerous French actors expressed solidarity with Depardieu, claiming the allegations were “an attack on art itself.” Notable signatories included Carole Bouquet, Pierre Richard, and Charlotte Rampling. Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron previously referred to Depardieu as “the pride of France,” which sparked backlash from many advocating for women’s rights.
