Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president, has criticized the US for imposing sanctions on Moscow. He accuses America and its allies of waging a no-holds-barred war against Russia.
Medvedev, who was the head of state from 2008 to 2012 and now serves as a deputy president, has been vocal on social media, especially during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine led by Vladimir Putin. His recent comments have included hawkish rhetoric and even threats of nuclear strikes against the West.
In a recent post on his Telegram account, Medvedev expressed his dissatisfaction with the new US sanctions announced before the G7 Summit. These sanctions target individuals and institutions supporting Putin’s military actions and restrict Russia’s access to US technology and software.
Medvedev raised the question of how Russia should react to these new measures, given the many challenges the country already faces. He stressed the importance of a response not just from the government but from all individuals who care about Russia, stating, “The USA and their allies have declared war on us without following any rules!”
Medvedev emphasized the need to cause harm to countries imposing sanctions by targeting their economies, institutions, leaders, and the well-being and confidence of their citizens in the future.
He suggested exploiting weaknesses in Western economies, crippling their businesses and government agencies, and instilling fear of imminent collapse in critical infrastructure.
Medvedev also mentioned the possibility of using all available weapons, including nuclear arms, against adversaries engaged in space warfare.
Despite facing harsher sanctions and financial difficulties due to the conflict in Ukraine, Russia has received support from China in circumventing these restrictions and enhancing its industrial capabilities.
US Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, has announced further sanctions on Russia, including stricter controls on semiconductor sales and more severe penalties.
