Moscow is considering its options following Western discussions about allowing Ukraine to use long-range weapons for strikes deep into Russian territory, according to President Vladimir Putin.
In an interview with state media, Putin expressed hope that Western nations have taken note of his warnings regarding the use of these weapons. He stated, “They haven’t informed me directly, but I trust they’ve heard my concerns.” He indicated that if this happens, Russia would have to respond accordingly.
While Ukraine has requested permission to use long-range Western weapons, it is currently limited to short-range systems to protect its borders. However, Ukrainian forces have been using long-range drones to target Russian military bases and supply depots deep within Russian territory.
The United States has supplied Ukraine with the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), which can reach targets approximately 190 miles away. The U.K. and France have also contributed the Storm Shadow, or SCALP, cruise missiles with a range of around 155 miles. These weapons have been deployed against Russian-controlled areas that are internationally recognized as Ukrainian.
Although Germany has refrained from providing its Taurus missiles, which are similar to the Storm Shadow, there are indications that this stance may change soon, although no official announcements have been made.
As the war grinds on for over two and a half years, relations between Russia and numerous Western nations have deteriorated to their lowest point since the end of the Cold War, with Ukraine increasingly relying on Western support.
Putin remarked that it’s “too early” to discuss potential responses but assured that military leaders are considering different strategies. “Our military command is brainstorming options for addressing this situation,” he added.
In remarks from mid-September, Putin warned that if Western countries permitted Ukraine to strike Russian territory, it would essentially mean their direct involvement in the conflict. He emphasized, “Such actions would signify that NATO countries, including the U.S. and Europe, are parties to the war against Russia.” He also expressed that any such developments would drastically alter the nature of the conflict and prompted Russia to consider appropriate countermeasures.
NATO has consistently maintained that it is not engaged in conflict with Russia and seeks to avoid escalation.
Putin concluded by stating that Ukraine would not be able to effectively utilize long-range systems without the support of its Western allies.
