Since its controversial annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, not recognized internationally, Russia has utilized the region as a strategic military base, including naval operations in Sevastopol and logistical support for troops in mainland Ukraine.

Ukraine has targeted key Russian assets in Crimea, such as advanced air defense systems, air bases, and naval fleets, prompting Russia’s urgent need to fortify its air defenses.

The Crimean Bridge, linking Crimea to mainland Russia, has been a focal point of conflict. Built post-annexation and inaugurated by President Vladimir Putin in 2018, it symbolizes both infrastructure and propaganda significance to Russia.

Reports from Crimea suggest Russia is strengthening defenses around the Kerch Bridge amidst ongoing tensions in the region.

Recent incidents, like Ukrainian drone attacks on a Port Kavkaz ferry terminal near the Kerch Bridge, have heightened security concerns. Ukraine has targeted this location before due to its strategic importance.

Ukraine’s military actions, including strikes with U.S.-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems, have prompted Russia to deploy sophisticated air defense systems, including the S-400, Pantsir, and Tor systems, to protect critical infrastructure.
