Recent reports reveal that Russia is incurring significant losses in both troops and equipment in its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, according to new data from Kyiv.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported on Saturday that the day before, Russia lost 1,470 soldiers, marking the highest single-day loss since September 21 when the figure reached 1,500.
An independent tally by Mediazona and BBC News Russian, published Friday, confirmed over 71,057 Russian military deaths, reflecting an increase of 1,998 since mid-September.
These figures are likely lower than the actual toll, as they are compiled from public records, obituaries, family posts, and regional media reports.
The hardest-hit regions include Rostov, Sverdlovsk, Bashkiria, Chelyabinsk, and the Buryatia republic. There’s also been a noticeable rise in casualties among recruits from predominantly Muslim areas like Bashkortostan and Tatarstan in recent months.
This count includes over 4,100 officer fatalities and at least 13,175 inmates who have died on the eastern front.
In addition, Ukraine reported that, in the last 24 hours, Russia lost significantly more specialized equipment than usual—five times their typical daily loss. Special equipment, encompassing electronic warfare systems, radars, and mine-clearing vehicles, totaled 99, far exceeding the usual 18 to 22 losses per day. The cumulative losses since the conflict began now stand at 3,291.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is in the U.S. to discuss his strategy for ending the war and recently met with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in New York City. In an interview with Fox News, Zelensky highlighted the urgent need to apply pressure on Putin, stating, “The problem is that Putin killed so many people; we need to do everything to pressure him to stop this war.”
