Ukrainian military sources report a failed attempt by Russian troops to storm positions in Kursk oblast. A video showcasing the battle’s intensity was shared by Ukraine, illustrating the ongoing conflict.
Since entering the Russian region on August 6, Ukraine claims to have seized around 500 square miles. Speculations about their long-term strategy have emerged as both sides intensify their efforts.
Initially, Russia’s response was tepid, but they have recently begun counterattacks, with unverified claims of regaining some territories.
Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces took to Telegram to announce a successful defense against a Russian storming attempt. Reports reveal that Ukrainian troops engaged in a prolonged battle that lasted several hours, decisively defeating the attackers.
According to reports from Ukrainska Pravda, the Russian force sent 14 military units, including two tanks, eleven infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), and one armored personnel carrier, at Ukrainian paratroopers. However, the offensive was unsuccessful, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Ukrainian defense.
A 73-second video depicted dramatic explosions, showing the destruction of an IFV and a building housing Russian troops. According to the report, five IFVs, a tank, and an APC were destroyed, with numerous Russian soldiers either killed or retreating.
This comes amidst a recent assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which noted that Russian forces in Kursk Oblast continue their counterattacks but require additional troops for effectiveness.
Currently, around 35,000 Russian troops are said to be in the region, though it’s unclear how many are regular soldiers versus less effective conscripts or auxiliary forces. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned that Moscow might have up to 70,000 personnel deployed in Kursk, significantly more than U.S. estimates suggest are necessary for pushing Ukrainian forces back.
On Saturday, the Ukrainian intelligence group DeepState reported territorial gains in Vetryano, Durovka, and parts of Zhuravli, alongside a map sharing these advancements. Meanwhile, Russian forces reportedly reclaimed Snagost and surrounding villages, further complicating the frontline dynamics.
