Ukraine Imposes Lockdown in Border Regions Following Russia’s Lead

In response to heightened tensions along the Russian border, Ukraine has implemented restrictions on civilian movement in areas near Kursk. This decision comes in light of escalating fears regarding potential Russian retaliation amid ongoing cross-border operations.

Ukraine’s Armed Forces shared on social media that, as of August 13, certain areas in the Sumy region would have limited access to prevent possible threats from Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups, especially following Ukraine’s surprise offensive. The military command stated, “The movement of civilians is restricted within a 20-kilometer border zone to protect both the civilian population and military personnel.”

Officials emphasized that while these measures are temporary, they are necessary as operations in the Kursk region continue. Residents in the restricted areas can still enter their homes by presenting proof of registration.

Vdovychenko, a representative from the military command, noted the risk of intensified combat operations and potential enemy reconnaissance, hence the need for movement restrictions. Access to these areas is limited to those with valid Ukrainian passports and registration.

Amid these developments, the head of Ukraine’s Security Service, the SBU, cautioned against possible Russian disinformation campaigns claiming Ukrainian war crimes, particularly following allegations of chemical weapon use by Ukrainian forces, as asserted by the Kursk governor.

Reports suggest Ukraine is preparing for a significant missile and drone response from Russia due to the ongoing offensive in Kursk. Concurrently, Russian authorities have initiated evacuations in the Belgorod region, citing increased military activities near the border.

Belogrod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov communicated via Telegram that residents from the Krasnoyaruzhsky district would be relocated to safer locations due to the “tense operational situation.” Access to these districts has been restricted to enhance safety, according to local officials.

The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed concerns over the humanitarian impact on civilians amid these military escalations. A UN spokesperson reiterated that the protection of civilians must remain the highest priority in all military operations.
