Watch a Rare Russian TOS-1A System Get Destroyed in Ukraine!

Ukraine has successfully taken out a Russian thermobaric artillery system known as the TOS-1A, or Solntsepyok, in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, according to Kyiv’s SBU security service.

A video released by the SBU shows night-vision footage captured by a first-person view (FPV) drone striking the TOS-1A system, followed by the explosive aftermath.

Thermobaric weapons, also known as vacuum bombs, generate explosive blasts by using two detonations, resulting in significantly more destructive power than conventional arms. These types of munitions have a history of use by military forces in various conflicts, including by the Soviets in Afghanistan and Chechnya, as well as by U.S. forces in the 1960s.

The British Defense Ministry noted that thermobaric rockets produce “incendiary and blast effects” that can inflict severe damage on structures and living beings alike, with potential for causing fatal injuries.

Designed for striking buildings and trenches, the TOS-1A can launch multiple thermobaric rockets and is mounted on a tank chassis, allowing for rapid deployment. This upgraded version has enhanced range due to longer rockets, as described by the U.S. military.

Russia’s defense exporter labels the TOS-1A as a heavy flamethrower capable of rapid deployment, emphasizing its lethal capabilities. The SBU highlighted the importance of this system as a key target, referring to it as the “pride” of Russian military innovation, but noted its rarity on the battlefield.

Previously, Ukraine has reported successful strikes against TOS-1A systems, underlining their ongoing efforts to diminish the capabilities of Russian artillery.
